To tell the truth, this book could probably been the most touching story I have ever read! Although I was not used to the tales at the beginning of the story, in fact, most of the characters in this book were juveniles who were too used to cause crimes. However, there were people among them who were having true feelings and loves.

Amazing as it was, the author, S.E Hinton, was only in her age of seventeen as she wrote this book. This book was very well-organized. In the mid-1960s when it was first published, the book was being received with immediate appeal. Although it was a teenage rebel story, it was not like most of the other novels telling about teenagers breaking away from restrictive parents. The fact was that the story hardly discussed about adults at all, and what was more intriguing was that it was about teenagers themselves regarding each other. S.E Hinton wrote this book, because she wanted to record the violence that took place between the greasers and the Socs. The Outsiderscaptured friendship, with its complex codes of loyalties, all with a perfect way. The author won great acclaims for The Outsiders, and the success made her able to attend college. Even now, the book was still having the impressiveness as the time when it was first published. The readers would never forget the sad end of the book, including the death of two teenagers. At least the ongoing of Ponyboy and his brothers would sooth them a bit.

Ponyboy was 12, and he was one of the members in the gang “greasers”. That referred to the adolescent in the East Side. They were never rich, and their biggest enemy was the Socs. Socs were a gang living in the West Side, and they were all consisted in rich families. The two gangs were constantly having fights, and people were often being sent to jail. Ponyboy’s parents were evidently killed in an automobile accident, and there were only three brothers in the family left: Darry, Soda, and Ponyboy. Their relationships were fine, rarely having any argues, “until the night someone takes things too far.” One night, as Ponyboy and Johnny, the gang’s pet, were lying in the fields watching stars, Ponyboy went to sleep with thoughts. It was not until in the midnight when Johnny reminded him to go back to his brothers did he realize that they had not been home in the right time- far from it, though. Johnny’s parents never cared about him, they were kind of disgusted at Johnny, but Johnny was a kind of people that would be kind to people and was willing to listen to people when they talked. When Ponyboy got home, he found out that Darry got really mad at him—he did the thing that anybody would not have expected. He slapped real hard in Ponyboy’s face. Ponyboy was desperate, and he ran away alone with Johnny. That was where the story began.

After they left, they encountered some Socs, one of them, Bob, beat up Johnny not lately. They nearly drowned Ponyboy when Johnny pulled up his switchblade and killed Bob in self-defense. The Socs ran away, got on the car, and sped off. Johnny and Ponyboy were really scared, and they went and found Dally, also one of the members of the greasers. He was a real tough person, and he got in jail for such a lot of records that it could be defined as innumerable. After hearing the speech, Dally offered them to go up to one of the churches in a mountain and stayed there until Dally went for them. He also gave them some money, and a gun to defense themselves. They went up the church and stayed there for a week.

After about five days, Dally managed to get up to the mountains and take them down for a drink. They never wanted to go up to the church anymore. But right at that moment, the church started on fire, and from what the crowd gathering around mentioned, five little children were in there, and not able to get out. Ponyboy and Johnny did not hesitate to run up to the church and save them. Together, they saved all those five children. Ponyboy was doing fine, but Johnny might never be up again…

After hearing the news that Johnny was dead, Dally went wild, and he robbed a grocery store. He was shot by the police. Two young souls rose into the far sky…

From what I have read, I believed that the book was what people called authentic friendships. Maybe the people might have difference with each other, rich or poor, young or old. However, friendship existed forever, and it was the best love I’ve ever known.
